The Fundamentals of Clinical Pharmacy Practice course is designed to facilitate a pharmacist’s transition into hospital pharmacy practice. Created by expert pharmacists in pharmacy education, this course aims to assist the learner’s development in areas of essential clinical practice and fundamental clinical knowledge. Our educators support and guide participants to develop core clinical knowledge and skills, preparing the learner for clinical pharmacy practice.

Core Modules
The online component of the course comprises of twelve e-Learning modules:
Experiential Activities
Gain hands-on experience in hospital pharmacy with expert guidance from experienced clinical pharmacists
Interactive Workshops
- 2 x 2-hour interactive face-to-face or virtual case-based workshops will allow learners to apply the knowledge gained through the e-Learning modules to clinical patient cases
Experiential Placement
- 1 x 8-hour experiential placement day at the Alfred Hospital where learners will observe and support an experienced clinical pharmacist, facilitating the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to clinical practice
This activity has been accredited for 18 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 18 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 18 hrs of Group 2 CPD (or 36 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.

On completion of the online eLearning modules, participants should be able to:
- Understand hospital processes and the role of a clinical pharmacist in maintaining hospital workflow
- Identify and assess core clinical pharmacy activities
- Describe key concepts in completing Best Possible Medication History (BPMH), Medication Reconciliation and Discharge processes
- Apply knowledge when completing a clinical review of a patient
- Evaluate the management of patients with Sepsis, Acute Kidney Injury, Delirium, Cardiac Conditions, Surgical Interventions, and Diabetes
On completion of Workshops and Experiential Placement, participants should be able to:
- Interpret clinical information and demonstrate a clinical review of a patient
- Demonstrate key concepts in completing Best Possible Medication History, Medication Reconciliation and Discharge activities
Each online module will be followed by an online multiple-choice question assessment. Module 2 and 6, as well as Modules 8 through to 12, include a short answer question assessment.
Participants who register for the experiential placement at Alfred Health, will also undergo a Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) and an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) with an experienced clinical pharmacist.
Learners will be awarded a certificate of completion upon satisfactorily completing the required learning and assessments.
