About Alfred Health’s Pharmacy Department

Alfred Health is a leader in healthcare delivery, improvement, research, and education, and provides the most comprehensive range of specialist medical and surgical services in Victoria.

Alfred Health’s Pharmacy Department is a recognised leader in the provision of comprehensive contemporary pharmacy services and has integrated clinical, educational, research and stewardship programs.  This includes unit based and patient centred clinical pharmacy programs supported by established education programs including foundation and advanced training residencies, as well as formalised credentialing programs for many innovative clinical roles. The Pharmacy Department prioritises the delivery of excellence in patient care and the development, evaluation and adoption of innovative practices that improve the services provided.

The pharmacy service has three key priorities, which include:

  1. Medication safety

  2. Effective use of medicines, and,

  3. Delivery of specialist pharmacy expertise at critical points in the patient care pathway.

We strive to innovate and optimise our pharmacy services through adoption of state-of-the-art technologies that provide closed-loop medication management which integrate clinical expertise and decision support with digital strategies, including a digital electronic medical record and automated dispensing machines.

In support of these services our pharmacy team have also developed leading processes to procure, supply and distribute medicines across a comprehensive range of specialties and settings, including:

  • Acute care settings (e.g., Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit)

  • Surgical settings (e.g., Pre-admission and Peri-operative)

  • Transitions of care (e.g., Hospital-in-the-Home)

  • Subacute settings (e.g., Rehabilitation)

  • Ambulatory settings (e.g., Outpatient Clinics and Telehealth).

Our highly experienced Senior Pharmacy Leadership team (including Pharmacy Executive) have expertise in all facets of decision-making regarding availability and accessibility of medicines for our patients, including formulary management and evaluation.

Through our research programs, our pharmacy team have established expertise in the design, development and implementation of strategies which improve medicine accessibility and safety in contemporary practice. Furthermore, our team has extensive experience in all phases of the medication development cycle, from first-in-human phase 1 to phase 4 medication studies, through the delivery of our industry-leading pharmacy clinical trials service.

Introducing Alfred Health’s Pharmaceutical Industry Education Programs 

The Alfred Pharmacy Learning and Development Hub are excited to launch two first-of-their-kind Pharmaceutical Industry Education Programs:

  • Program A – Decision-making in medication availability in public hospitals
  • Program B – The medicines journey: From purchasing to patient administration
 
Who should attend these education programs?

These education programs have been specifically designed to cater for teams with a range of experience and responsibilities in medication innovation, optimisation, delivery, and/or sales, including but not limited to:

  • Pharmaceutical Portfolio/Product Specialists
  • Pharmaceutical Account or Key Account Managers
  • Medical Science Liaison Managers
  • Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives
  • Commercial Managers and Executives
  • Project and Quality Assurance Managers, and,
  • Anyone interested in learning about decision-making in medication availability and/or the journey of medications through a public hospital.

Each education program will be tailored to the learning requirements of a particular team working within the same organisation or company. 

 
Who will design and deliver these education programs?

These education programs are designed and delivered by our Senior Pharmacy Leadership team (including Pharmacy Executive) in collaboration with our specialised team of Workforce and Development pharmacists. We will work in consultation with you and your team to curate customised program(s) which meet the learning requirements of your team.

 
How will these education programs be delivered?

Each education program will be:

  • Interactive and delivered face-to-face at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne
  • Delivered over 1 day (8.5 hours including breaks)
  • Comprised of:
    • Interactive presentations
    • Small group discussions, and,
    • Practical observations within relevant areas of the pharmacy department and/or wider hospital.

Each session included in these education programs will be delivered by experts in the field of medication management at Alfred Health, including members of our Senior Pharmacy Leadership team (including Pharmacy Executive), as well as Senior Medical Practitioners and/or Registered Nurses.

 
What is the cost of these education programs?
  • Each program (A and B) will cost $2500.00 (including GST) per person.
  • Further discounts may be considered for group registrations – costs will be tailored depending on group size.
  • These programs will be limited so please e-mail us at pharmhub@alfred.org.au today if you would like to register your team to avoid disappointment.

Teams may register for one or both education programs, depending on their interests and learning requirements.

 
Can your team design and deliver customised education programs?
